Now here’s an interesting invention. A colleague send this URL to me which, looking at the name didn’t look too interesting to begin with. Well, after making some effort, it’s nothing new - but surprisingly it good to see people thinking “outside of box”. A rarity these days. I suppose you could get any old RAID solution and build it yourself, but most chassis’s prove rather expensive and still require a certain amount of technical knowledge e.g. SOHO RAID from Stardom Solutions
But here’s “Drobo” - an odd name, but I have to say if this box was for sale in Thailand, I’d snap it up in an instant. I have no idea whether it’s actually any good, but it looks damn good to me. And well, it looks like an iPod and did I try someone else before I got one? Nope.
But it’s got interesting features which, makes my like a whole lot easier. Especially, in almost every company I’ve worked for I’ve ended not only being a web programmer, but also the resident IT guy. Any of you in the same position as I’ve been it knows what a pain in the ‘buttocks’ it can be when you need to concentrate on an urgent project.
- Combines up to 4 Harddisks (of any size, ANY SIZE!!!)
- Self managing - none of the RAID shit, it does all the work for you (I like!)
- Self repairing - I have no idea what this means but it sounds cool!
- Add drives when you need to, don’t need to upgrade like RAID
- Supports Windows / Mac’s - handy, though I’m wondering about Linux
- Hot swap drives
Erm, not that I work for these guys - but CrunchGear had a positive review of the product.
Shame it’s a tad on the expensive side … at 499USD I guess I’ll need to save up a bit, and some how be lucky enough for one to float to this side of the world. But in Thailand, there’s always ‘You make it, we copy it’ to look forward to ;-)
